📊 Tax Proposal Update: Preliminary Numbers Look on Track

During the October 16 Trustee meeting, there was some encouraging early discussion regarding senior tax relief under Ohio House Bill 96. Based on those conversations, it appears that my initial tax proposal estimates are in line with the township’s preliminary figures. That’s good news — it means the relief framework I outlined is both realistic and financially responsible and could provide up to an additional 2.5% in relief using the Homestead Credit for seniors who qualify.

Last night, a friend brought something important to my attention: how any senior tax relief proposal under HB 96 would need to be enacted at the county level. Two core principles I live by are accountability and responsibility. So, I want to be transparent with you — I have to be accountable for my proposal and responsible enough to admit where it wasn’t entirely accurate as soon as I discovered it.

While the estimates themselves appear sound, I initially did not make it clear that the actual legal authority to implement this program rests with Geauga County commissioners, not the township. That’s an important distinction, and it’s one I want every voter to understand.

🏡 Why This Matters

  • Many seniors in our community are facing rising property taxes on fixed incomes.

  • Targeted relief can help keep long-time residents in their homes.

  • Responsible planning ensures the township remains financially stable while helping those who need it most.

📝 Next Steps

My commitment remains the same:

  • Advocate at the county level to make Russell’s voice heard.

  • Push for local control where possible, ensuring relief reflects the needs of our community.

  • Keep residents informed as the process moves forward.

Fiscal responsibility and compassion can — and should — work together. The October 16 meeting is just the beginning of that conversation, and I’m ready to keep it moving — with accountability and transparency every step of the way.

👉 When elected, Heutmaker and Ishee will aggressively work with Geauga County to bring additional property tax relief to senior homeowners in Russell Township. This isn’t just a proposal — it’s a commitment to stand up for the people who built this community and deserve to stay here.

The Republican super majority legislature of Ohio made this proposal possible, so I suggest you contact our state rep and senator with your concerns, who are both very conservative.
